My life as an artist began in Tulsa, Oklahoma where I observed my father in his studio.  I watched as he created inspiring pieces; works that awakened a desire to tap into my own artistic ability. Today, I strive for my work to show my unique style and my love for creating art. By staying active as an artist in the community, creativity remains as a critical part of my daily life.

I received my bachelor’s from Pittsburg State University and my Masters of Art in Teaching at Missouri State University in conjunction with Missouri Southern State University. I am an art instructor at Carl Junction Junior High School.

For me, teaching becomes an art form, and the reward is in watching my students develop their own artistic style, while learning to express their voice through art. Art plays an essential role in defining who we are. There are no boundaries, allowing the journey to be in the eye and heart of the beholder.

My work starts with a color scheme and then evolves into compositions which represent figures and objects. I arrange objects in my work to produce a personal perception and interaction within a visual presentation.  Serenity and simplicity are my primary goals.

For me, art is a synthesis of my personal feelings and the subjects and colors that inspire me. Life experience is a creative catalyst, and each encounter with a new person has a purpose.  Each person is a piece in the overall composition of my life.  My desire is for my work to portray that ideology.  My work is an expression of my soul’s journey through life; an extension of who I am.

Philosophy of Teaching

Art plays an essential role in defining who we are. It is the ultimate form of communication and crosses language barriers throughout the world. Teaching to me becomes an art form and the end result is watching my students develop their artistic style and express their voice through their work while gaining confidence in doing so. It is with sincere love of the arts and with a passion to teach which contributes to a student finding success in their careers and lives as community members later on in life.

My classroom mission is to provide each student with a positive creative experience and to see each student succeed in their abilities through art. Providing a safe and creative environment in hopes that each child will become lifelong participates in the visual arts through attending community exhibits or showing support of the arts is a goal worth investing in.

I believe that creating art is a choice and one of my goals in reaching junior high students, is by presenting the projects as opportunity to explore and engage in the creative process. Through this process I hope students will gain an appreciation for the differences in each other and in the world of art. Students will learn how to achieve artistic challenges through the applications of using a wide range of mediums and providing quality activities to successfully meet classroom goals.

We celebrate in the completed creations and well-crafted artworks by participating in community displays and local competitions. I believe the influence of art education on a student’s learning contributes to the overall success in core subjects. The implementation and continuation of art education compliments individual learning styles of students and promotes success in every aspect of the students learning. While we celebrate collaboration and group effort, those approaches are more successful if each person in the collaboration has gone through the solitary process of self-reflection and gaining self-knowledge. Students who are nurtured through the arts, ultimately discover their own potential.

Art was the first recorded form of communication. Throughout history, art has been used to communicate historical times, religious information, cultural stories, styles and expressions. It is by using the artistic style of communication, we are able to visualize pre-historic times and experience what our ancestors saw, experienced, and how they survived. Students can grow and understand the world through the arts and by integrating concepts of math, social studies, science and communication. Art may be the subject I am certified to teach, but I also implement core subjects like basic math, geometry through the introduction of architectural design when we are drawing out a foundation of a building structure. Through the study of art history, students can gain an understanding of their world through art and the history of a culture. My students learn about African history as each chooses a village to read and then creates a mask that identifies the culture of that village. When I teach on Egyptian history, I introduce students to the style of art that is depicted throughout the decorated walls of pyramids and monuments built in honor of their gods and rulers. It is the writing on the wall which communicates history. Chinese art and writing is exhibited as each student learns to write their name in Chinese and learning about the meaning of some cultural practices the group of people participate in. With the process of understanding a culture and piece of art, it may be through that involvement, we, the viewer realize and understand the experience and begin to value the importance of art in our everyday life.

Teachers use art activities to increase students’ learning. Art education and what art education has to offer enhances educational comprehension and the learning strategies and styles of a student. The artist used imagination to create something of beauty and significance. Techniques, theories, principles and artistic style create the final production, the work of art. As an art teacher, knowing the importance of advocating the instruction of art in public school, promoting the awareness of what art has to offer with the academic environment. Art is a primary contributor in the educational process.

Technology has played a large role in the delivery of quality art education in my classroom. The addition of a Smart board, projector and document camera, allows me to increase student engagement and awareness in art, resulting in increased learning. I use technology daily to show demonstrations and art examples to my students. I can take them on virtual tours of art museums from all over the world and share examples of art exhibited in other communities. Using a Facebook and our webpage allows me to showcase student work and what is being taught within the classroom which also encourages parent involvement through the connection of online social pages.

As a teacher, my goal is to create a learning environment that is encouraging, supportive, inspiring and tangible in every life situations. I believe my teaching style is an extension of who I am. Hopefully, this belief will provide a successful roadmap for students I have the opportunity of teaching and guiding on this journey in life.

Community involvement has always been an important part of my life. Giving back through time and talent in the community is an investment I feel is part of citizenship and pride in community.

When I arrived in Pittsburg Kansas, I began my first semester in college and I found a church I liked. Meeting others through community events, attending church and college classes allowed me to make some solid connections that would eventually turn into long term friendships. My friends would become part of my family and be a support system that my son and I would benefit from.

In 2003, I became involved with a church youth group as a youth sponsor. At that time, Carl Junction experienced a tornado that damaged several homes and businesses, including school buildings.  We took the youth group and spent a few days in the community helping individuals and groups clean-up damage left behind. From this act of service to many others, I continued my involvement in the youth group for six more years. Being involved in the youth group influenced my decision to later interview for the Carl Junction Junior High Art Teacher position in 2006 in Carl Junction.

Throughout the years of being a resident of Pittsburg and working in Carl Junction I have continued to build my portfolio and encourage my students to do the same. I wanted to lead by example as both an artist and a teacher so I started to display my artwork in local art walks in both Pittsburg and Joplin. Being a part of the art walks helped me to gain confidence to share my work in more art events and local galleries like the Spiva Center for the Arts in downtown Joplin.

The idea of serving others through charitable work is what stirred a desire to use my art in a charitable manner to the community. Using art to influence, impact and inspire others allowed me to stay active as an artist to serve my community through art. I was inspired to be a part of the SEK Art Fests and the Community Theater as an artistic director in creating art to raise funds for non-profit organizations such as IDES, Joplin Tornado Recovery and Joy in the Journey ministry.

In 2009, my son and I became Ambassadors for the Children’s Miracle Network. We were serving as a voice for the organization and sharing the opportunities available for other families who like us were dealing with ongoing medical needs. I presented the idea of using art as a way to help those in need to my classroom students. For example, my students raised funds through their espresso paintings for the SEK Humane Society, collected can goods during our Andy Warhol assignment for a local food pantry, and decorated over twelve hammers for the Hearts for Hammers project: a fundraiser that would support Joplin in rebuilding five new homes destroyed by the 2011 tornado. My students continued to use their artistic talents to support the local Lions Club and by being involved in the Lions International Peace Poster Contest which we had an International winner from our group two years in a row. Being a part of the Peace Poster gave the Lions Club an opportunity to share the mission of the organization. Just this last fall my students made over one hundred and fifty bowls out of clay, to be sold at an event called Empty Bowls which is a fundraiser for local food pantries and homeless shelters in the Joplin area.

As a teacher I also want to encourage and promote student artwork. I am proud of their achievement in completing pieces that helped build their confidence in creating art. Displaying student work requires a lot of additional time outside of my teaching schedule and I view this as a way to give back to my students for all their hard work. Displaying student artwork, submitting student work into competitions and giving my students opportunities to explore such venues is one of my goals in their development as artists. Seeing my student’s view of themselves transform from self-doubt to believing in their ability to create art is worth all the additional hours it takes to submit work and display work.

Using technology such as social media allowed us to invite the community to events such as the Big 8 Art Show hosted in 2014 at the junior high. Over two hundred and fifty pieces of artwork were on display as well as in competition within categories. As the host of the event, I wanted the community to have the opportunity to view the work and come to an event that was both fun and inviting. Using our Facebook (CJJH Art Class)”like” page, it also encouraged more parental and community support. Sharing information on our page allows students and parents to be informed about local events in art.

Making a connection between the success of my students and the support by the community, is something for students to observe and learn from.  The experience of being an active artist and giving back to the community is an experience that can impact the lives of the students in a positive way.  I believe educators should be visible leaders in the community by staying active in the service they are drawn too.  I hope I am a teacher that can be seen as leading by this example.
